Six Cultural Faux Pas to Avoid When Traveling
69
If you are a world traveler, you may visit many different countries which each have their own faux pas, or bad etiquette, that violates their customs or manners. The literal French translation of faux pas is “false step.” Knowing these cultural norms or rules will help you avoid taking these wrongs steps in social and diplomatic settings.
Bad manners can happen at the dinner table or in other social or business settings. The number of cultural faux pas is extensive and this list is clearly not inclusive of all cultures or violations of social etiquette within each culture. However, it is a place to start.
Common Cultural Faux Pas
- Do not use your left hand to eat or shake hands in Hindu or Muslim countries. This is a definite no-no. It is considered a hygiene issue since the left hand is used to wipe oneself in the bathroom, so it is considered unclean.
- In Japan, there are many faux pas surrounding chopstick
use. One that is important to know is to never
place your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl. The standing chopsticks
resemble the funeral rituals used to honor the dead.
- In Greece, showing five spread fingers with the palm facing out is offensive. This is called moutza and is not taken as the number five, but rather a rude gesture. Holding out five fingers with the palm towards you is acceptable.
- Showing the soles of your shoes in Arabic or other Asian countries, such as Thailand, India, or Bangladesh, is a disrespectful implication. The feet are regarded as the least sacred part of the body and considered unclean.
- Don’t turn down vodka in Russia. If you are visiting Russia and are offered vodka, it is considered rude to turn it down. It is obligatory to drink with the Russians and vodka is a big part of their life.
- In the United Kingdom, peace or “v sign” with the palm facing towards you is a offensive gesture, similar to the middle finger in the United States. This is also true in Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Research Culture Before You Go
Before you head out to visit a foreign country, be sure to
research some of the customs and etiquette. This may not cover all the etiquette and social rules, but you will be able to find out about the most common ones. Always be courteous and respectful
to other cultures. Cultural misunderstandings are bound to happen though. Especially the first time you travel to a foreign country.
If you do something that is considered faux pas, don’t stress about it. Depending on the person or people you may have offended, they may be quick to correct you or may give you a dirty look. If you get strange looks, just ask a local about the customs, learn and move on.
Better yet, laugh about it over a coffee or tea.

Interesting hub. Good thing I'm too broke to travel especially to a hindu or muslim country since I'm left handed. I would never turn down vodka though
