Shopping online has boomed in the last decade due to the different opportunities for making online purchases.  Stores have added websites for consumers to shop from the comfort of their home.  In addition to traditional stores adding websites, there are sites like Amazon who provide online only stores.

When you want to purchase an item outright without negotiating price, the above two options work great. But, there are times when you may want to negotiate or put a bid in for a particular item. This is where auction websites come in to the internet shopping experience.

Although, using online auction websites has some similarities as regular online shopping, consumers should be aware of the differences when making a purchase through auction websites. It is important for shoppers to understand the need to research suitable prices for items before making a bid, understanding the bidding process, and knowing the policy on returning items.

The research before making a bid is an important step in the process. The research process is not extensive and is relatively easy. Some consumers do research before making any large purchase, whether online or not. However, the research employed for auction websites has some differences.

One of the things a consumer should look at is the reputation of the seller.  This is crucial because unlike most widely known retailers, an online seller may not be as reputable. Auction websites will have a feedback section where consumers can look at the selling and buying history of that seller.

How do you know if the seller is reputable?

In general, a reputable seller will have a significant amount of feedback, and the majority (at least 95%) of the feedback is positive. Buyers should be cautious of sellers that have no feedback, very little feedback or a large amount of negative feedback.

Carefully investigating this feedback can help to prevent the buyer from making a costly mistake.  The feedback will provide information on the seller’s reputation on varies things, including the quality of the product, shipping practices, and any experiences with return products. 

Look at Prices of Comparable Items

For common items, this is easy to research just by comparing the items to stores that already sell that item. For unusual or rare items it may be more difficult to gauge the appropriate price. 

One way consumers can do this is spend some time researching recently sold items comparable to the product they are looking to purchase. This can give the online shopper a reasonable indication of a fair price for the item.

This research will also reveal the availability of that particular item.  The shopper can use this information to determine the acceptable bid price on a demand basis.  If the demand is high and availability is low, this will affect the bid. Conversely, if there are an abundant amount of this product available, they will likely have several opportunities to bid on this item.

Once the research is out of the way, it is time to start bidding! Before jumping in head first on bidding, take the time to understand the bidding process for the auction site you are using. 

Knowing the bidding process can help the buyer avoid mistakes like overpaying for an item or avoiding a bid win. Understanding the bidding can provide a shopper with bidding strategies to help get the winning bid. Pay attention to some of the veteran buyers and get a feel for how they receive winning bids.

After you understand the bidding process, start bidding on items you wish to purchase.  If you win a bid on an item for the price you wanted to pay, it can be exciting.  Remember once you win a bid, there is no changing your mind.

On traditional online shopping or in person shopping, returns may be a relatively easy process. It is best to understand the return policy BEFORE you place the bid. Reputable sellers will have a return policy or statement in their bid description or on their store page.  Buyers who are concerned about the possibility of returns or refunds should carefully review that information.

If the information is not on the bid description or listed anywhere else, contact the seller via email and ask any questions you need to be clear on the return and exchange policy.  This is especially important on rare, used, or big-ticket items. As an online shopper, you should also review the seller’s policy on returns of defective items or products that do not match the description listed on the bid description.

Getting a bargain is always a good feeling, especially if it is an item you think is a diamond in the rough.
