Get Your Certification as A Spinning Instructor

Indoor cycling is great way to burn a bunch of calories. Why not become a spinning instructor and get paid to teach a class? Before you can teach, the first step is to get your certification as a spinning instructor.

If you do an online search, you will discover that there are many certifications out there. One of the most commonly recognized certification is from the creator of Spinning, Johnny G, the founder of Mad Dogg Athletics (MDA).

When you get to the site (spinning.com) mentioned above, put in either your state or your zip code and you will be able to see the classes available in your city.

Then you will have to register for the orientation. There is a fee for this 9 hour course. The course is a comprehensive workshop that gives you the tools and resources you will need to be a spinning instructor.

The orientation is a one-day, nine hour intensive class.  The price for the class includes the Spinning Instructor Manual which is available as reference during the class, the Spinning Instructor Assessment, and two rides with a Spinning Master Instructor.

During the class, the instructor will take time to help you learn how to set up the bikes and give you tips and suggestions.  The class also includes instruction on proper techniques and forms.  The goal is to provide all the right tools to get you motivated to lead your own class.

The Spinning Instructor Manual is to help you learn Spinning techniques and help prepare you for the online assessment. Everything you need in order to pass the assessment is in this class and the manual. Be sure to study the manual and ask questions in class!

After the orientation, you will have to sign up to take the online assessment. Even though you can take the assessment at your convenience, it is probably best to take it soon after the orientation so it is fresh in your mind.

Once you feel prepared to take the assessment, get back online at spinning.com.  After you log on to your account, click the link labeled "Online Assessment Test." Your test will then begin! 

After you take the assessment, and get a score of 80% or higher, you will get a Spinning instructor certification card in the mail. The Spinning certification card will be good for two years.

Then, you can apply for jobs online. It may be hard to get a job right away, depending on your market, the size of your city, and facilities available.

But, you can sign up to be a substitute. The pay will be lower for a sub, but it is a good way to stay active and get your feet wet.

As with most certifications, you will need to obtain continuing education credit to stay current. You will get what is called STAR points by taking online courses or quizzes or attending different workshops. To maintain currency, you will need to obtain a minimum of 14 STAR points every two years.

Be prepared to buy gear, clothes, and music for your classes. It helps to be prepared for your classes.

You will not get rich as a Spinning instructor. This is more of a supplemental income for stay-at-home mothers, retirees, or part-time work. If you love Spinning anyhow, why not get paid to teach the class? Classes will pay depending on where you live. But, expect only about $20 - $30 per 45 minute class.
